Simple Nutrition With The BGG

As we’re settling into the new year and feeling tempted to follow the latest and great diet trend, I encourage you to try something different. And not different in the sense of avoiding healthy foods or a lifestyle change, but different in how you approach it. Here’s the thing, following a diet trend or jumping on a label is easy. I hate to say it, but it’s really easy. You don’t have to put much thought into why you’re eating what you’re eating; you simply have to worry about whether or not it follows the “rules” and guidelines. And that’s the problem.  When we rely on rules and guidelines, we never really learn how to think for ourselves, which means we never really learn how to eat for ourselves. Say you follow a Paleo diet for a few weeks and then you’re out with your friends and can’t find a single meal labeled “Paleo approved!” Then what? Do you skip dinner all together, or order what you want and feel guilty?

Now imagine following a “whatever works for you” diet because you actually understand why you’re eating what you’re eating.  Instead of rules and regulations, you go by how you’re feeling, what you’re in the mood for, and what will benefit your body and your goals most. With knowledge comes confidence and power. By understanding basic nutrition, the world is your oyster! You can eat at any restaurant, shop at any grocery store, and be in total control of your choices based off of what you like, what you want, and what you need.

Every diet plan, every label, every great marketing campaign to encourage you to keep up with your Paleo, Whole30, Keto trifecta diet plan is simply a band aid to the issue. We don’t actually know how to eat. Well, we know how to eat, but we don’t know what we should be eating to benefit our health and one step further – achieve our goals. We know what we want – we want to lose weight, we want to gain muscle, we want too feel better – but we don’t know how to navigate the middle stuff.

We’ve never promoted, encouraged, and supported a “what works for you diet.” There has always been a new diet plan, a new regiment, and a new set of rules to follow. Look back through the decades, ask your mom, ask your grandmother – there has always been a new craze to follow, a new promise for losing weight and optimizing your health. In the end, they have always fizzled out. Atkins, The Zone Diet, and South Beach Diet are some of the biggest diet trends from the eights, nineties, and early two thousands era. Today, The Paleo Diet, Keto Diet, and Whole30 are among the most popular. In ten years from now, I am sure there will be a handful of others.

I’m not blaming anyone and I would never discourage anyone from actively trying to improve his or her health. I’m simply encouraging you to grasp the idea of changing the way you diet, the way you view and value food. As a Nutritionist, there is nothing more fulfilling than watching a client flourish and move on from my program with knowledge and confidence to live a healthy lifestyle for forever. There’s a lot of hard work, effort, and education from point a to point b– and that’s okay. That’s a good thing. It’s not as simple as “eliminate this – avoid that” and you might not lose five pound in one week. And that is okay. All good things take time. To master anything – a skill, a habit, a new routine – takes time. Your health, your body, and your goals are no different! It takes time, thought, and attention to get to where you want to be.

If you build your base, understand the fundamentals and create a strong foundation – you will never ever have to worry about dieting or molding to fit a label, ever again. The first step is finding reliable resources, whether it’s a textbook, a friend, or a Nutritionist - invest in that resource and be willing to learn. Be okay with the time it will take, the attention you will put in, and the occasional sacrifice from time to time. I told you, it’s not easy. Following a diet plan is easy, you just have to follow the rules. Finding what truly works for you – your forever diet – learning and understanding basic nutrition is slightly more complex. It takes time and it takes conscious attention, which is why most people opt for something easy.
